Eat This: El Filet at Tango Sur

Chicago is known for having impeccable steakhouses, but dining at these downtown meat palaces comes with a high price tags. If you’re on a budget but still want to enjoy a fantastic steak dinner, head a little further north, to Tango Sur. Located on Southport at Addison, this Argentine steakhouse delivers the country’s famously tender beef at a lower price tag. Plus, it’s BYOB, which means you can bring your own wine and same even more.

While the entire menu is stocked with meaty goodness, the standout dish is the “el filet” a platter of not one, but two, large filets. Juicy, tender, and perfectly cooked to your liking, the dish is accompanied by spinach mashed potatoes and a green salad, and is easily big enough to feed two people. And at just over $30, it’s a spectacular deal.

Other highlights of the menu include the empanadas, just two bucks each for steak, chicken, spinach or chorizo, and the gooey provoleta, a plate of melted cheese perfect for spreading on crusty bread. True to the cuisine of Argentina, there are also several excellent pasta dishes to choose from and the desserts are delicious as well.

Ambiance in Tango Sur is perfect for date night or an evening out with friends, with white tablecloths, low light, and tall tapes candles on every table. Unfortunately they don’t take reservations for small groups (if you have more than 6 people, call ahead) but there is a small waiting room in the back so you can crack open your bottle of wine while you wait. There is a well-stocked wine shop called Que Syrah across the street. They offer an extensive selection of inexpensive wines, including Malbecs that perfectly compliment the food. The also often host free wine tastings.

With delectable Argentine food, a romantic atmosphere, and low prices for the quality (and quantity) of the food, Tango Sur is a great spot for hungry diners on a small budget.
